5 Simple Habits for Better Energy, Strength and Wellbeing

Many women tell me that their forties and fifties can feel like a turning point.

Energy levels change. Sleep becomes less predictable. Weight may shift despite eating and exercising in the same way as before. It can be frustrating when the approaches that worked in your thirties no longer seem to have the same effect.

The good news is that you don’t need an expensive supplement regime, a restrictive diet, or the latest wellness trend.

The foundations of good nutrition still matter, and often small, consistent changes make the biggest difference.

1. Prioritise Protein

As we age, maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important. Muscle supports strength, mobility, balance and metabolic health.

Protein also helps us feel fuller for longer and can help stabilise energy levels throughout the day.

Practical ways to increase protein include:

  • Eggs or Greek yoghurt at breakfast
  • Fish twice a week
  • Adding beans or lentils to soups and stews
  • Including a source of protein with every meal or snack

2. Eat More Fruit and Vegetables

Fruit and vegetables provide vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre that support health during midlife and beyond.

Rather than focusing on what to remove from your diet, start by asking:

“Where can I add another portion of fruit or vegetables today?”

A handful of berries with breakfast or an extra serving of vegetables at dinner can make a meaningful difference over time.

3. Don’t Overlook Fibre

Fibre is one of the most important nutrients for digestive health, blood sugar regulation and feelings of fullness.

Good sources include:

  • Oats
  • Wholegrain bread and pasta
  • Lentils and beans
  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Nuts and seeds

Increasing fibre gradually and drinking enough water can help support a healthy digestive system.

4. Slow Down When You Eat

Modern life encourages us to rush everything, including meals.

Yet eating more slowly can help us recognise hunger and fullness cues, improve digestion and make meals more enjoyable.

Simple strategies include:

  • Sitting down to eat
  • Turning off distractions
  • Putting cutlery down between mouthfuls
  • Taking time to enjoy food with others

5. Be Mindful of Alcohol

Many women notice that alcohol affects them differently in midlife.

It may contribute to poorer sleep, reduced energy, hot flushes and slower recovery from exercise.

This doesn’t mean you need to stop drinking altogether.

Instead, notice how alcohol affects your sleep, energy and wellbeing, and make choices that feel right for you.

Remember that as your body changes and adapts so can your habits.

The Bottom Line

There is no perfect menopause diet.

The habits that consistently make the biggest difference are often the simplest:

✔ Eat enough protein

✔ Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables

✔ Include fibre every day

✔ Slow down at meals

✔ Be mindful of alcohol

Small steps, repeated consistently, can have a powerful impact on how we feel during midlife and beyond.
